James writes: "In many ways I owe publication of this novel directly to my Boot Camp experience. It was at Boot Camp that Card pitched the Phobos contest, which I won later that year with my story "Empire of Dreams and Miracles," which gave me the foot in the door I needed to get to know the editors there.
