Shades of Milk and Honey (Tor, 2010) is a regency romance written as if Jane
Austen lived in a world where magic worked.
In my version of Regency England, glamour - pulling magic from the ether - is
considered one of the womanly arts, like painting, dancing or playing the piano. It
takes energy, just as running up a hill might, so young ladies who perform glamour
are constantly in danger of fainting. Jane Ellsworth, an accomplished amateur
glamourist, and her sister Melody are both in love with the same man. Jane is
convinced that she is too plain to ever know love, and that her best hope is to help
her sister get married.
When two eligible young men come to the neighborhood, Jane watches as her
sister flirts with both the dashing Captain Livingston and Mr. Vincent, the
renowned glamourist. Jane does not realize, until too late, that Captain Livingston
is a rogue, set on taking advantage of her sister. In a desperate bid to save her
sister from ruin, Jane pushes her skills at glamour to the limits of what her body
can withstand.
Congratulations to former 2005 Bootcamper Mary Robinette Kowal. She has made her first pro-sale to Strange Horizons. It's due out in early 2006. She has also recorded one of her short stories for The First Line's online audio fiction series.
